The visual code of a body is one of the most dominant images in our culture.
memory. The recognition of the idea of a certain appearance is always connected with a gaze, a spectator.
If one focuses on the conditions of the gaze, it is never innocent and embedded in power structures, hierarchies, different milieus, objectification and censorship. The body functions equally well as a tool, as signifier and signified, and it can be used as a medium for exposure or masking. The body’s memory can produce presence and absence, virtual space or deconstruction and abstraction. It creates an inside and an outside - a specific transfer connected to the individual and the collective.
The view in the works of Elizaveta Kapustina and Eva Yurková can be perceived as sexually charged. Both construct their narratives on the objectified self, which is placed in the context of their cultural background.
On the contrary, the body forms that appear in Sophie Esslinger’s paintings are highly fragmented. Sophie ś explosive images occasionally transform into amorphous genitals or woven fences.
