Ma Jia

Ma Jia (born in 1981 in China, currently lives and works in Vienna)

For the ROTATION exhibition, Ma Jia, who is better known for her massive metal sculptures will showcase some of her earlier paintings that demonstrate her transition towards the sculptural materiality of her current work. The paintings, which have been rarely exhibited, employ the technique of pressing oil paint onto unstretched canvas- forming thick vertical black bands, the formal relationship to her current use of industrial pipes from gas & oil pipelines can be foreseen.

Ma Jia studied painting in Hangzhou and Beijing, before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (under Heimo Zobernig). Over the past few years, her work has focused more on public art and sculpture, which marks a recent shift in her artistic career away from painting.
