With Xeno And Oaklander from Brooklyn NY, Future Echo is proud to present one of the most renowned acts of today’s Cold Wave Era. Using analogue synthesizers and instruments only, Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride (aka Martial Canterel) push Europe’s early New Wave music forward into the new decade, drawing from the richness of a minimalist approach. As part of the Wierd Records family they have been featured in publications such as Wire, The Guardian, Quietus and Vice Magazine. Their live shows have been taking X&O not only to vibrant Synth Wave club-nights, but also to showcases at the New Museum in New York, the Art Basel Miami or the Kunsthalle Zürich. The performance in Vienna will be accompanied by a film screening curated by Liz Wendelbo.

Liz Wendelbo’s Sets and Lights is a series of short films shot on 16mm and presented in three chapters: a group of abstract films, Opticks XVIII, XIX, XX; footage featuring her band in a deserted military compound by the sea; and a reworked industrial film from the 1950s. A photographer and filmmaker, Wendelbo is also a member of the Minimal Synth duo Xeno & Oaklander (Wierd Records, NY). When Sets & Lights premiered at the New Museum in New York in October, 2010, curator Ethan Swan described X & O as “the brightest duo in the contemporary minimal electronics world.” Band mate Sean McBride (aka Martial Canterel) created an original composition for Sets and Lights, designed to correspond with the analogue, “one take, gear fetishism” inherent to
Wendelbo’s practice of Cold Cinema. (Approximately 35 minutes)
