Philipp Fleischmann

For his first solo exhibition at Wonnerth Dejaco, Philipp Fleischmann produced two new Film Sculptures. This term, coined by the artist, not only refers to the physical integration of filmstrips into sculptural objects; it also reflects the particular sensibility, analogous to that of sculpture, with which he treats the filmstrip’s surface as a continuous material body beyond an understanding of it as support for the cinematic frame. It is Fleischmann’s first work entirely made in a studio setting.
Philipp Fleischmann (1985, Hollabrunn) recently exhibited his work at the 34th Bienal de São Paulo; at MACRO, Rome; and at the Austrian Film Museum. In his practice, he explores the logics and mechanisms of the institution and the myth of the neutral space, in which he repeatedly intervenes as an active player.
