TecTales

For its fourth edition, TecTales invites artists Sara Bezovšek, Karin Ferrari, Yan Chmarau and Nova Lux to an evening that moves between longing and disillusionment. The works on display explore the internet and digital cultures from diverse perspectives, opening immersive, messy spaces full of broken links, intimate memories, and latent madness.

Bezovšek’s film plunges us into a rabbit hole of apocalyptic catastrophe fantasies. Like in a Doom Scroll, pop culture references from videos, GIFs, and memes, gathered from forums and comment sections, interweave into a visually saturated narrative that exposes the internet as a polyphonic archive of recognizable crises.

Chmarau’s work composes intimate, almost forgotten videos from abandoned social media profiles in a post-Soviet context. Between intimacy and unguarded public exposure, these fragments condense into a collective memory of coming of age in a bygone online era.

Ferrari takes us on a psychedelic road trip into a bizarre world in the hybrid terrain of the Carinthian highlands, where dairy farming, car batteries, high-tech, crypto-economies, post-digital mythology, and professional paranoia collide.

In Lux’s video work, grotesque home cooking tutorials, cat videos, and self-ironic performance intertwine. With exaggerated effects and Monster Energy used as marinade, the video negotiates the aesthetics of social media as a place of excess and permanent self-staging.

There is little time for nostalgic idealization; reality quickly catches up with us. What once existed as an idea of collective imagination, experimental forms of expression, and hopes for decentralization is now shaped by platform logics, extractive economies, surveillance, and resource dependencies.

Complementing the screening, Lux develops a sound performance of new pieces in which ethereal tones, electronic residues, and organic impulses form sonic ecosystems. Between playful lightness and raw intensity, mechanical sounds tip over into fragile harmonies.

TecTales is a multidimensional screening event at discotec, organized by Tina Kult. The event presents significant positions in contemporary video art and, alongside discotec’s regular exhibition program, creates a dedicated and communal space where moving images can be experienced in their full length. TecTales also features a curated lineup of notable musicians and sound performers, accompanied by a culinary program, providing a platform for lively discussions and interactions.
