IFK_PODium: Pop and Politics before/after the Crisis
The rise of neoliberalism and post-Fordist flexible capitalism has fundamentally changed the relationship between politics and popular culture. While the public sphere has become depoliticized through the radical marketisation of youth cultures and lifestyles, conservative hegemonies in many Western countries have injected the spaces of everyday life with regressive appeals to mood, passion, and sentimentality. As a consequence, large segments of the population are at odds with organized politics, though this has not impeded increasing votes for rightist parties. According to Lawrence Grossberg, this new hegemonic pattern has forged the decline of civil society and eviscerated the recognition of popular culture as a terrain and weapon of political struggle.
Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung findet die Präsentation von Lawrence Grossbergs nunmehr auf Deutsch erschienenem Buch “We gotta get out of this place. Rock, die Konservativen und die Postmoderne” (Löcker Verlag, übersetzt von Stefan Erdei) statt.
