In between more complex projects I’ve always shot simple formal experiments in 16mm. I think of these films more as moving parts that test out their relation to each other in different forms, I also write a lot of what I feel is the scattered nonsense that enters my mind and leaves it almost without leaving any trace — not in relation to these films, but usually attempting to think through the inscrutable parts of dreams and relate them to more concrete lucid questions. For example, I might try to put together last night’s dream in which a friend appears as dancer, assassin and flying police woman to a question about grammar or language. It’s a strange marriage and it produces odd results, which I will be sharing in a live talk/screening with a collective improvisation.
A selection of these films will remain installed.
Beatriz Santiago Muñoz is an artist and filmmaker based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her work is indebted to histories of art and film as processes and practices of experimentation and improvisation, whether alone or with others. Current and recent artistic interests include film–painting encounters, a human-ish horse considering their freedom, philosophical investigations of the animal kingdom, feminist experiments with grammar, simultaneous narration, and the anti-colonial unconscious. She co-founded Beta-Local, an artist-run space in San Juan, and she is a member of Sociedad del Tiempo Libre, an artist cooperative. Recent solo exhibitions include: Elogio al Disparate, Vienna Secession; Ottilia, CRAC Alsace; and Oriana, Pivô, São Paulo, and Argos, Brussels. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2026, a Herb Alpert Award in the Arts in 2025, the 2021 Artes Mundi Prize (shared among all seven nominees), and was a 2023–2025 Fellow at the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA).
