Die Religion des Volkes der Matabele ist synkretistisch. Sie verbindet das Christentum mit traditionellen Glaubenssystemen, die durch das Ndebele-Orakel in den heiligen Matopos-Bergen (Emetojeni) symbolisiert werden. Der wichtigste Berg der Verehrung ist Njelele, wo Regenrituale abgehalten werden. Von dort hallen Tanz und die „Rhythmen der Matabele“ aus den Bergen in die Herzen der Menschen wider – ein musikalischer Aspekt, den die Matojeni Melo-Maniacs mit dem Rest der Welt teilen.

Die Matojeni Melo-Maniacs (MMM) sind eine Kulturgruppe, die aus erfahrenen Künstler:innen besteht – Cherly Mabaya, Thandeka Patricia Jele, Gugulethu Sibanda, Mthabisi Moyo und Bekezela Siziba, wobei Blessings Nqo Nkomo (von Insingizi) das Ensemble verwaltet.
Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, die Ndebele-Kultur zu fördern und zu bewahren. Außerdem soll es Frauen eine Plattform bieten, um Zugang zu Chancen, Ressourcen und ihren Rechten zu erhalten und Kontrolle über ihr eigenes Leben zu erlangen.


Beschreibung der Musik

Da sich die weltreisenden Kreativen zu MMM zusammengeschlossen haben, verspricht das Projekt ein echter Knaller zu werden, zumal die erste EP der Gruppe, „Rhythms of the Matebele“, die im Juli 2023 erschien, die Messlatte für ein kulturelles Gemeinschaftsprojekt sehr hoch gelegt hat.
Die EP besteht aus den Songs „Pembela“, „Africa“, „Emeli lo-Dlala Regina“, „Inkomo Zamalobolo“ und einer Extended Version von „Emeli Lo“. Es ist ein Mix aus verschiedenen Sprachen, der Grenzen überschreitet und ein vielfältiges Publikum anspricht.
Ihr allererstes Projekt wird sicherlich beim Kalanga-Clan Anklang finden, da der Song „Pembela“ (frei übersetzt: „Ziellos umherwandern“) in ihrer Sprache gesungen wird und den traditionellen Amabhiza-Tanz weiterführt – eine Haltung, die den Wunsch der Gruppe zeigt, traditionelle Lieder und Tänze zu fördern. Die Matabele sind ein Volk des Gesangs und des Tanzes, das vor Freude ulult und pfeift. Sie trinken auch trübes Bier, und MMM hat dies im Lied „Pembela“ eingefangen. Die EP hat eine große kulturelle Bedeutung, da sie vermittelt, wie die Matabele miteinander umgehen. In dem Lied „Inkomo Zamalobolo“ wird die Bedeutung der Mitgiftzahlung in den Vordergrund gerückt und den Jungen vermittelt, dass Eheangelegenheiten nach den Regeln des Buches geregelt werden müssen. Die Verschmelzung traditioneller Instrumente wie des Shakers (Hosho) und Trommeln mit europäischen Instrumenten wie Gitarre und Keyboard verleiht diesem Projekt einen unverwechselbaren und authentischen afrikanischen Klang. 
„Unser Ziel bei der Aufführung traditioneller Musik ist es, Menschen durch die Musik zusammenzubringen. Indem wir unsere traditionelle Musik singen und aufführen, haben wir ein starkes Fundament geschaffen, das uns niemand nehmen kann. Dieses Fundament wird uns die Kraft geben, unser Leben selbst in die Hand zu nehmen.“

Introduction

Amongst the Matebele people, their religion is syncretic. It combines both Christianity with traditional belief systems symbolised by the Ndebele oracle in the sacred Matopos Mountains (Emetojeni). With the major mountain of worship being Njelele, where rainmaking ceremony is held, dance and the “Rhythms of the Matabele” are echoed out from the mountains to the hearts its people, a musical aspect that Matojeni Melo-Maniacs are sharing with the rest of the world.


Background Information

Matojeni Melo-Maniacs (MMM) are a cultural group that consists of veteran artists –
Cherly Mabaya, Thandeka Patricia Jele, Gugulethu Sibanda, Mthabisi Moyo and Bekezela Siziba, with Blessings Nqo Nkomo (of Insingizi), being the ensemble’s manager.
The aim of this project is to promote and preserve the Ndebele culture. It also involves providing a platform for women to access opportunities, resources, and their rights, and to have control over their own lives.


Description of music

As the globetrotting creatives joined forces in forming MMM, it is expected for the project to be a humdinger of a venture as the group’s first Extended Play (EP) Rhythms of the Matebele released in July 2023, has got all the stakes high for a cultural joint.
The EP consists of songs Pembela, Africa, Emeli lo-Dlala Regina, Inkomo Zamalobolo, and an extended version of Emeli Lo. It is a cocktail of diverse languages that cut across borders, catering to a diverse audience.
Their first ever project will surely resonate with the Kalanga clan as the song “Pembela” (loosely translated as “Wander aimlessly”) is sung in their language and carries the Amabhiza traditional dance forward, a stance which shows the group´s desire to uplift traditional song and dance.
The Matebele are people of song and dance and ululate and whistle in jubilation. They also drink opaque beer and MMM captured that in the song “Pembela”.
The EP carries weighty cultural significance as it teaches how the Matabele interact. In the song, Inkomo Zamalobolo, the issue of the importance of dowry payment is brought to the fore and teaches the young that marital issues have to be done by the book.
The merging of traditional instruments like the shaker (hosho), drums and European ones like the guitar and the keyboard gives a distinct and authentic African sound to this project.
“Our goal in performing traditional music is to bring people together through music. By singing and performing our traditional music, we have laid a strong foundation that no one can take away from us. The foundation will give us the power to control our lives.”
