The beginning of the art market is strongly intertwined with copying and printmaking. Yet, until today, the original is generally considered the most valuable work. This project investigates this historical concept through a collective process that approaches originals and copies as individual artistic positions and questions the idea of the master.
Rather than treating copying as reproduction alone, the project understands it as a form of artistic exchange, interpretation and inspiration. Through the collective process, the boundaries between original and copy, master and workshop begin to shift: What defines an original, and what defines a copy? To what extent can authorship be understood as collective? And does the original necessarily hold greater value?
By placing the works in direct relation to one another, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how artistic ideas move between individual practices and how meaning, authorship and value may change through the act of copying.
