Lisl Ponger will discuss her latest publication “Semiotic Ghosts” (Mandelbaum Verlag Edition Zyphius, 2025) with co-editor Elisabeth Streit of the Austrian Film Museum. The book presentation is followed by Lisl Ponger’s tour of her solo exhibition at Charim, “Tausendundein Prozent”.
Lisl Ponger’s works dismantle cultural stereotypes and challenge the power of images about others. In the decades of her work with photography, film and installation, the artist has consistently developed a characteristic “Pongerish perspective” on the world. Elisabeth Streit and Dietmar Schwärzler have invited scholars, curators and colleagues to examine the entire spectrum of Ponger’s artistic and socio-political commitment for the first time.
The result is a richly illustrated collection of essays in German and English that explore Ponger’s visual worlds and her visual strategies against the iconographies of injustice. The book is the first volume in the series “… eine Art zu denken” (A Manner of Thinking), published by Edition Zyphius in collaboration with the Austrian Film Museum.
Elisabeth Streit is a film scholar and head of the library at the Austrian Film Museum. She is the author and editor of film history articles focussing on image politics and emigration. Dietmar Schwärzler is managing director of sixpack film, and mediator of film and media. He has overseen the conception and organisation of numerous projects in the context of film and exhibitions.
