Silent like an Earring
The flavor was bonelike. More of an esophageal pressure, than salted or peppered. A scatter of dust and plaster in the throat, spilling through the teeth; like a secret, something that twitches in the silence, resenting its keep.
Rimbaud says, departure is new affection and new noise. But at least at first, it’s faint.
It registers differently - sound with no association - and that it can be so loud when it’s actually so quiet.
No human noise. Only dry breath.
It’s indeterminacy that’s the most resounding. Loud, but hard to hear.
