Jason Bunton: Obscured Ancestors

“The works in Obscured Ancestors reflect my interests in archeology, ancient or older cultures, their historical mark, and archeological reconstructions of the cultural material that was left behind. I’m interested in how biological material disappears through time, leaving only questions and mystery. The drawings and sculptures presented explore these themes while offering a record from a past people that never existed.”

Jason Bunton is an American artist living and working in Vienna Austria. He holds a Magister in Painting (Class Muntean/Rosenblum) with Honours from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and a BFA in Drawing with Honours from Webster University St. Louis. He uses drawing, sculpture, and film to create installations that investigate his interests in archeology, archeological reconstructions, folk art, music, and ancient or older cultures. He is drawn to organic material and appreciates fine craftsmanship. Isolation, rural peoples, the meaning of sacrifice, agrarian communities, myth and folktales are recurring themes in his works. Bunton has exhibited internationally in the US, Austria, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Since 2022 he has collaborated with archeologists and artists on Project Periphery, which merges both fields of archeology and conceptual art.
