„I Would Rather Be Horizontal“ ist eine multidisziplinäre Musikperformance, die sich mit dem Parkkontext des Festivals „Kultursommer Wien“ auseinandersetzt. Das Werk erkundet diesen Rahmen aus der doppelten Perspektive des zeitgenössischen Geigers Jacobo Hernández Enríquez und der Künstlerin und Architektin Sara Novi.
Diese Performance besteht aus einer Synergie zwischen einem Solokonzert für Violine und einem Architekturvortrag. Das von Jacobo gespielte Musikprogramm mit Stücken von unter anderem Kristine Tjøgersen, Clara Iannotta, Jennifer Walshe und Lisa Streich legt den Fokus auf die Natur und die Lebewesen, die im Park beheimatet sind: Vögel, Insekten, Pflanzen, Blumen und schließlich die Sterne in der Nacht. Sara bringt unterdessen ihre zugängliche Praxis des „Experiencing Architecture“ ein und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Gestaltung des Parks, in dem die Performance stattfindet. Sara analysiert den Raum aus emotionaler Perspektive und nimmt das Publikum mit auf eine fantasievolle und oft humorvolle Reise. Gemeinsam wollen sie eine ausgewogene und spielerische Atmosphäre schaffen, in der Klang und Text miteinander verwoben sind.
Inspiriert von dem Gedicht „I am Vertical“ von Sylvia Plath lädt „I Would Rather Be Horizontal“ das Publikum dazu ein, sich dessen bewusst zu werden, was es im gegenwärtigen Moment umgibt, und rückt dabei ins Fokus, was normalerweise unbemerkt bleibt. Durch die Erstellung und Beschreibung einer imaginären Karte werden der Blick und das Gehör des Publikums durch die vertikalen und horizontalen Ebenen des Parks geführt, auf einer Reise vom Boden, auf dem wir stehen, bis hoch in den Himmel.

“I Would Rather Be Horizontal” is a multidisciplinary music performance that addresses the park context of the Kultursommer Wien festival. The work explores this setting through the dual perspectives of contemporary violinist Jacobo Hernández Enríquez and artist/architect Sara Novi.
This performance consists of a synergy between a solo violin concert and an architecture lecture. The music program played by Jacobo, with pieces by Kristine Tjøgersen, Clara Iannotta, Jennifer Walshe and Lisa Streich, among others, puts the focus on nature and the creatures that reside in the park: birds, insects, plants, flowers, and, in the end, the stars at night. Meanwhile, Sara brings her approachable “Experiencing Architecture” practice, focusing on the design of the park in which the performance takes place. Sara analyzes the space from an emotional angle, embarking the audience on an imaginative and often humorous journey. Together, they aim to create a balanced and playful atmosphere interweaving sound and text.
Taking inspiration from the poem “I am Vertical” by Sylvia Plath, “I Would Rather Be Horizontal” invites the audience to be aware of what surrounds them in the present moment, bringing into focus what usually goes unnoticed. By constructing and describing an imaginary map, the gaze and ears of the audience are conducted through the vertical and horizontal planes of the park, traveling from the ground we step on to high up in the sky.
