Initially, the notion of ‘the other side’ was taken quite literally, understood simply as the other side of the street. Iris Julian filmed a projection of light on the façade of the Café Kriemhild, which is located in the 15th district of Vienna. The resulting short video was sent to theoretician Patrick Hubenthal, based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, who then filmed the video as it was screened on his PC. He subsequently sent the video back to Vienna.
During our artist talk, Claudia Sandoval Romero (Cali - Sāo Paulo - Vienna) and Iris Julian will discuss ‘the other side’ from different perspectives.
SINGULAR PLURAL WAYS OF STAGING TOGETHER
Iris Julian
published by Transcript (Bielefeld) as part of Critical Dance Studies
384 pages, 2024
In her cultural studies research, Iris Julian examined the staging processes of contemporary dance performances. Since the 1990s, conceptual dance artists working in collectives have countered the singular of individual authorship with methods that both preserve the individual choreographic signature and weave it into the plural of the group.
