I Cannot Decolonize my Body: my body is a border and so is this land

I cannot decolonize my body: is a 45-minute live performance that brings together embodied action, locally sourced materials, sound, poetry, and research.

In a repetitive sequence of gestures, the artist tears pieces of fabric, immerses them in red pigment made from seasonal materials sourced from the region, and hangs them on a suspended clothesline. Gradually, the stained fabrics form a temporary archive, bearing traces of the artist’s actions and evoking associations with blood, land, labour, and histories carried across bodies and territories.

An audio composition interweaving poetry, research, factual information, and sonified data accompanies the performance, creating a layered encounter between body, material, sound, and knowledge.

Extending themes explored in the artist’s film presented in the exhibition, I cannot decolonize my body: invites the audience to witness memory and research as a living, embodied process – and to experience how histories of extraction and loss can also open up possibilities for transformation and renewal.

Tiara Roxanne (she/they) is a Purhépecha Mestiza transnational scholar and artist based in Berlin. Dr. Roxanne’s work rethinks the ethics of AI through an anticolonial, eco-cyberfeminist lens. Her practice investigates how artificial intelligence and digital technologies actively participate in territorial extraction, environmental devastation, and the displacement of Indigenous, marginalized and vulnerable communities globally. By centering Indigenous feminist methodologies, their research reveals how technological progress is bound to colonial legacies inscribed in land, bodies, and memory.
