All galaxies fit right in to one of the 3 main categories of galaxies, spiral, elliptical, and irregular. Some galaxies have additional characteristics that make them peculiar.
Peculiar galaxies may have things in common with several different galaxy types, such as size and star type, but then may lack a distinguishing shape and perhaps even contain an active nucleus - a supermassive black hole ejecting material into the intergalactic medium.
