Figure out

Independent Space Index Festival 2026

The exhibition is dedicated to the process of figuring out.

Wania Castronovo works with drawings, texts, and objects. In “circle. blue: looking ”, she repeats a structure until it changes, collapses or transforms. She focuses on instabilities. The text “Statue” does not describe a figure but produces it: through grammar, the relation between creator and what is constructed shifts. Structures and the interaction between bodies and materials are unsettled.

Sandra Lafenthaler presents her paintings from the project “Archaeology of the Present,” where the public trash can becomes the central focus of artistic exploration. A seemingly banal everyday motif
serves as the starting point in order to present it in an exaggerated way through its shapes and colours. In archaeology, not only valuable objects but also discarded items are included in research.

Helene Litorelle is presenting collages that are, at a first glance, peaceful images: like a butterfly or a tree. They are, however, made out of newspapers from 2022, when the full scale war in Ukraine began, and dealing with topics of war, flight, survival and hope.

Last September, Ania Zorh finally managed to bring her archive from Ukraine. Now she is rediscovering her older works, mixes and juxtaposes them with more new ones and tries to figure out what can be used for her PhD on invisible work. For this show she selected pieces from a longer period: 2003-2026, all related to/connected with female reproductive and productive labour.
