Join artist and historian Tayla Myree for a walk through Vienna’s first district and discover a past that is barely visible in the city today.

Starting at Weltmuseum Wien and ending at Hoher Markt, the walk traces the historical presence of Black and African people in Vienna in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Many of them lived here under conditions of enslavement, servitude or as prisoners of war, yet their lives and stories have largely disappeared from public memory.

Along the way, Tayla Myree introduces historical figures such as Angelo Soliman and Jacob Bock and invites us to think about those whose names and stories have not been preserved.

Participants will listen to letters addressed to “those who were once here” and encounter places in the city through a different perspective.

The walk is connected to Myree’s installation letters to those who were once here (2026) in the OPEN SPACE and asks: Who do we remember in our streets, monuments and museums? Whose histories remain invisible? And how can we create new forms of remembrance?

The walk is participatory, but you can engage in whatever way feels comfortable to you. You are also invited to bring a small object commonly used for remembrance or vigils – such as a flower, candle or small toy – to leave at one of the stops.
