Bury me, my Love and reality-inspired games

SUBOTRON arcademy /departure talk

Florent Maurin
Founder of The Pixel Hunt, Lyon

When we think of video games, we often associate them with fun, triviality and escapism – the games industry being first and foremost centered around entertainment. But that doesn’t mean games can’t try to explore other territories too, in the same way the cinema gave birth to documentary filmmaking and graphic novels naturally stemmed from comic books. That’s what reality-inspired games are about: they find their source in real-life events, and allow players to experience situations that they might otherwise never have been exposed to. In recent years, there has been a surge in this trend, and “Bury me, my Love” is part of it. In this talk, Florent Maurin will give a detailed explanation of what reality-inspired games are, and he will describe the specific process of making a game about contemporary international forced migrations.

Biography
Florent Maurin graduated from Lille’s journalism school (France) in 2002, and worked as a journalist for ten years. He then founded The Pixel Hunt, a gamedev studio with a focus on reality-inspired games. “Bury me, my Love”, The Pixel Hunt’s first independent game, was co-produced with Figs and Arte.
