In BEST COMPILATION EVER artists Livi Scheucher and Thea Ehre turn the moment of a kiss into a perpetual loop of gawky trials.
The work explores the logic of the compilation, familiar from YouTube, TikTok, or pornography, where loosely linked highlights form a genre. During their performance kissing becomes an ongoing, expansive encounter. Although kissing itself has no climax, it is often staged as a contractual conclusion: the proverbial “happy ending,” reduced to a consumable image. By rehearsing the kiss, the show interrogates expectations of climax and spectacle. Within the tension between big sensations and banality, image and embodied process, they reclaim repetition as a site of resistance.
The exhibition also presents a video installation referring to the spectacularity of circus and puppet theatre. While simultaneously engaging with and resisting expectations of entertainment, the piece explores alternative rhythms of living, desiring, and relating.
Working from genderqueer and transgender perspectives, the artists ground their collaboration in trust and radical openness. They conceive performances as gestures of hospitality, in which personal engagement remains evident. By prolonging and repeating the kiss, they critically engage with cultural narratives of desire, attention, and fulfillment, seeking to unbind familiar images and stories from their normative framing and generate alternative dramaturgies of desire.
Among many others Luce deLire’s essays Lessons in Love served as a core inspiration for the piece.
