Vienna-based artist Maruša Sagadin, *1978 in Ljubljana/Slovenia, studied architecture at Graz University of Technology before switching to performative art and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. From 2023 to 2024, she held a guest professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. From 2010 to 2016, she was a university assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the department of Professor Monica Bonvicini.
Maruša Sagadin’s work operates at the interface between private and public space and breaks with established codes for viewing artworks. Sagadin’s practice is based on an investigation into the history of architecture, questioning inclusive and exclusive moments in building spaces and the question of who public buildings are built for. Using humor and exaggeration, she addresses visibility and subverts the social discourse surrounding it.
Sagadin has had solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle zu Kiel (Kiel/DE), the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (Frankfurt/DE), the Cukrarna Galerija (Ljubljana/SI), the Christine König Galerie (Vienna/AT), and at SPACE London (London/UK), among others. She has participated in group exhibitions at the Kunstverein Siegen (Siegen/DE), the Belvedere 21 (Vienna/AT), the MAK - Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna/AT), the MAK Center LA - Mackey Apartments Garage Top (Los Angeles/US), Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon (Videbæk/DK), Syndicate (Cologne/DE), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna/AT), Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana (Ljubljana/SI), Grazer Kunstverein (Graz/AT) and Horse & Pony Fine Arts (Berlin/DE).
Maruša Sagadin was awarded the Förderungspreis des Landes Steiermark (2023), Msgr. Otto Mauer Prize (2022), the ISCP Scholarship (New York City/US, 2016), and the MAK Schindler Scholarship (Los Angeles/US, 2010).
